I gave this book 4.5 stars. As with most epic fantasy series, I always seem to struggle with the story coming to any type of conclusion. With that said, Maas did a wonderful job at giving us enough page time with each and every character in order to do their story justice. This book was packed full of action but also tied up loose ends which allowed the story to come to a perfect resolution.
I loved this series from the start, and this book was no different. At the end of book six, the main characters were left in a horrendously despair situation. This story picked up right from that beach, which set up the emotional tension perfectly. The emotions were deep, heavy and at times overwhelmingly desperate. There was just enough light in the dark to keep hope alive, but be ready for an emotional roller coaster (I cried multiple times, both sad and happy tears).
Having grown to love these characters, their stories in this book felt very meaningful, and I loved how they all continued to change and grow until the very last page. Page time was not skimped on any group which I was very worried about, due to the sheer amount of character stories throughout this series. Outside of the core group, it was fun to get to know some side characters a bit deeper, and to follow along as everyone’s paths merged together. Of course, the love stories are always my favorite and there were a plethora of beautiful ones in this book.
The plot was dense, and very military / battle heavy. It was necessary due to the nature of the entire series, that many battles would be fought in this book, however at times it was a bit much. I had to reference the map often just to stay oriented to the movements of the different parties and armies. While some of the army strategy and movements were lost on me, there were plenty of surprises (in true Aelin fashion) which made me smile. Also, the battle scenes themselves were epic and emotional. I loved getting to see more of the full extend of everyone’s powers (Rowan & Fireheart 😫💔).
The moral of the story is, this book was good. It lived up to its potential and it did this amazing series justice in coming to a close. Was it my favorite book in the series? Probably not - but endings rarely are (they are just so hard). Regardless, I am so so happy with the way that Maas concluded this series and I highly recommend anyone and everyone to take a chance on Aelin’s story.
